SCRAP - A Creative Reuse resource by and for San Francisco.

Inspire The People
SCRAP is an arts education nonprofit and creative reuse center based in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood. Since 1976, SCRAP has connected people with affordable art materials, hands-on education, and the power of reuse—putting the tools and methods of making in reach for everyone, especially teachers, students, and artists.

SCRAP was founded by arts administrator Anne Marie Theilen and celebrated artist Ruth Asawa, who responded to the lack of classroom supply funding for teaching artists by redirecting useful surplus from local businesses to public schools. Ruth Asawa went on to serve as SCRAP’s founding Board President for nearly 20 years. Her legacy lives on in everything we do.

Today, a dedicated team of 20 staff and 150+ volunteers serve over 37,000 visitors annually through the Depot of donated materials—diverting 250 tons of waste from landfill each year through more than 5,000 material donations. Our weekly after-school art and sustainable fashion design classes reach over 1,000 students in underserved Southeast SF neighborhoods, and we host 40+ onsite workshops and hundreds of offsite programs each year. Educators benefit from 10 free workshops and 2 annual giveaway events, reaching 300+ public school teachers.
